In conjunction with the American premiere of their newest work at the San Francisco International Arts Festival, the members of the Russian performance group, AKHE, will give a lecture-presentation of their work over the last twenty years to the Stanford community. Based in St. Petersburg, Russia, the AKHE Group has achieved cult status in many theater festivals worldwide. Alongside the visual performance for which they are most widely recognized, the group produces site-specific work as well as video art. Their idiosyncratic approach to performance combines the sublime with the banal, creating in a kind of ritualized theater of images situated between theater and art history, the antiquarian museum and the engineer's workshop. Theirs is a world where objects become actors and actors become objects, where Chaplin stutters on conducting alchemical experiments on the clutter of the 19th and 20th century.
