I think the reason for my mistake (if it was a mistake) was not my misconception about Africa, but an observation of a similar effect last November on Shell Beach, when the sunset sky was reflected on sand covered by water. I tried to take a picture of it (the last two pictures in my post from there), but didn't succeed. So, when I saw the picture, I've decided that Michael Sheridan had succeeded where I failed.
